On Wednesday, October 15, Mrs. Kayte Manuel's Spanish classes had the opportunity to speak with guest speakers from The Ohio Valley International Council (OVIC). The OVIC aims to promote cultural diversity and break down stereotypes through engaging presentations. The OVIC plays a pivotal role in enhancing cultural and global consciousness in Southeast Ohio. The students learned what microaggressions are, how they can affect a person, how to recognize them, and how they can stop using them among their fellow peers. The students had the opportunity to speak with students from Ohio University about their own culture and their own experiences with microaggressions.
Southern High School student council members attended The iBelieve Foundation’s Fall Leadership summit at Ohio University today. The summit focused on collaboration: what it takes to be a good leader and teammate. Attending from Southern High School: Advisor- Miss Davis; Students- Laynee Hill, David Kemppel, Hunter Moore, Brayden Otto, Kelsee Pickens, Carson Reuter, Chloe Rizer, Taylor Roberts, Ethan Rose, Ava Roush, Cole Smith, Lexi Smith, and Bryan Venegas-Mendoza.
RACINE, OH- With Thanksgiving quickly approaching, first graders at Southern Elementary in Racine were given a fun assignment that included their families.
First-grade teacher Sharon Gantt said the works of art on display in the halls are turkeys in disguise. The students worked with their parents or guardians to come up with creative ideas. There are different disguises including a unicorn, Hulk, Barbie and a clown.
The assignment stemmed from a book they read called “Turkey Trouble,” by Wendi Silvano.

Baylee Grueser was honored on Tuesday November 15th, 2023 after her proposal was chosen as one of the recipients of the Meigs Foundation grants! The Meigs County Foundation Board was very impressed with Baylee’s passion for her art program. The grant awarded Baylee with $2,000 dollars to be used with her Art Class. Baylee’s speech talked about how she was proud to come back as a graduate of Southern Local and bring back Art to grades 3-12. This money will help her purchase more paint related items and canvases and hopefully expand into photography, printmaking, and maybe even some pottery.

RACINE, OH- On Tuesday, November 7, 2023, seniors at Southern High School met with a representative from Ohio University.
OU Senior Admissions Advisor Adam Bjorlin spoke to the teenagers about many topics such as the admissions process, programs available, and scholarships.
The seniors also told Bjorlin what career fields they were interested in pursuing after high school.

Mark your Calendars!! The Southern High School Band is hosting a fundraiser and bake sale at the Pomeroy Wendy's on Saturday, December 2nd from 3:00p.m. to 7:00p.m. All sales made at that Wendy's during the 4-hour time frame, 10% of the total sales will be donated to the band. We will even have donation buckets inside and out if not wanting to eat at Wendy's but want to donate or get items from the bake sale instead, for the support of the organization. Thank you to everyone that attended and participated in our 2023 Literacy Night. The winners of our raffle drawings were Jill Proffitt, Deckar Thomas, Emi Brinager, and Avery Stout. The winners of the door decorating contest were: 1st Place Mr. Zach and Ms. Thomas, 2nd Place Mrs. Ash and Mrs. Lisle, and 3rd Place Mrs. Rachel Hupp. We appreciate all the kind words, and look forward to seeing everyone again at Math and Science night in the spring.
