RACINE- Students at Southern High School are gaining practical experience in crime scene investigation and evidence collection through the forensics class instructed by Mrs. Courntey Manuel.
On Tuesday, October 2, 2024, Mrs. Manuel orchestrated a simulated crime scene in her classroom with the assistance of her Educational Service Learning professional, senior Madelyn Houghton. Mrs. Manuel expressed her appreciation for Madelyn's comprehensive work in creating witness testimony for the mock Crime Scene Investigator team. The team members were assigned various roles, including forensic photographer, detective, crime scene tech, crime scene officer, scene sketch artist, and captain.
Southern Local Schools Resource Officer Jimmy Spears, from the Meigs County Sheriff's Office, provided professional assistance to the students in the crime scene investigation. He demonstrated the proper steps and offered valuable insights into crime-solving techniques.
Mrs. Manuel emphasized the value of simulated crime scenes in helping students in forensic science courses gain practical experience, demonstrate their knowledge, foster teamwork, and enhance their critical thinking skills.
She also expressed her excitement in observing students meticulously documenting the conditions at a crime scene and identifying all pertinent physical evidence.
The project process encompasses investigating the scene, analyzing the evidence, and formulating a case conclusion.
