Mr. Hoback (HNB), Ava Roush, Mrs. Peterman (SLSDBOE)
Ava Roush - 12th grade - Nominated by Beth Lanning
I would like to nominate Senior Ava Roush for the prestigious title of Student of the Month. Her dedication and commitment to every internship she has held through Project RISE and BB2C have been truly admirable. Ava has demonstrated her exemplary skills at nursing homes, and currently, she is imparting her expertise at Southern while helping younger students. She has exhibited a high level of responsibility, dedication, and kindness towards others. When my office was being utilized for testing, I had the privilege of observing Ava in action. She displayed remarkable empathy and kindness towards the students she was working with. Her guidance and support have been of immense value to the students who require academic assistance. Ava's maturity surpasses her age, and her conduct is always commendable. She is a bright light, and her impeccable character has earned her respect from everyone around her. A moment that stood out to me was when she stated that the internships have played a crucial role in determining her future. After interning at a particular place, she realized that she did not want to pursue that career, which was a significant turning point for her. What a meaningful moment! Ava Roush deserves to be Student of the Month. -Beth Lanning
Staff Member of the Month:
Mrs. Peterman (SLSDOBE) and Mrs. Hill
Brittany Hill Nominated by Autumn Porter
Brittany is a paraprofessional in my class. She is always going above and beyond for the students. She makes sure each student feels apart and involved in everything we do. Brittany is very organized and keeps our room looking very clean and homey. She and our class cleaned and organized the Kathryn Hart Center and made it look very nice. She always helps out anybody who needs it. The students love her and appreciate all she does for them. For me personally Brittany has been a Godsend and I don’t know what I would do without her. She exemplifies what being a TORNADO is all about. - Alan Crisp
I think Brittany Hill should receive this award because she takes the extra time in the mornings to make sure she helps the office for the kids who come in late and even helps keeping watch in the mornings when the kids do come into the school. She also does her very best to make sure her kids that she helps in the room get the help and support they need with their academics. Lastly, she does an amazing job of trying to keep everything on track with her cheer team by getting things together for pep rallies and ball games. She might look like she's going crazy at some times but it's just her talent working at her finest.
Teacher of the Month
Mr. Whitlock and Mrs. Peterman (SLSDBOE)
William Witlock Nominated by Misty Evans, Beth Lanning, and Kayte Manuel
When I think of who should get the award this month, Mr. Whitlock comes to mind. He meets a lot of the criteria. Mr. Whitlock is excellent in the Classroom. I say this because he is always trying to help his students so they can be successful. I feel like Mr. Whitlock comes up with very creative assignments. Mr. Whitlock is always motivated, ready and prepared for his class. Mr. Whitlock is very dedicated to his job, He is always on time and ready. He only misses work when it is absolutely necessary. He is also very professional. Mr. Whitlock is always dressed professionally and always shows respect to staff and students. Mr. Whitlock is always helping in the community. He helps with RACO, which is a big part of our community.
I would like to nominate Mr. Whitlock for Teacher of the Month at Southern High School. He is one of the funniest people I know. He makes learning fun for the kids while maintaining high expectations. In my experience, most students do not have a deer-in-the-headlights look when he is teaching. He has a lot of energy and doesn’t give off the ”I hate my life” energy. He connects well with the students. He mentors them in a way where they see they are important and can accomplish great things. Mr. Whitlock is very smart. I believe his leadership skills are excellent. He is prepared, communicates well, listens well, is a great problem solver, he adapts well to challenges and he also has empathy, sympathy, and most importantly, patience. He has excellent control of his emotions and keeps his cool when students test him. Mr. Whitlock goes the extra mile to help students get basic needs and extra support if they’re struggling in his class. I’m sure that is the case for many staff members. Mr. Whitlock is a lot of fun and funny! Students are having a blast in yearbook! He is making it fun and has mentioned that he expects a lot out of them too. In a different class, the students are going to work on documentaries thanks to a partnership with WOUB-TV, I believe. Their work is going into a big project that will be seen by lots of people. It’s so amazing! I am super excited for the students!!! How cool is that? What an experience!
Mr. Whitlock has been doing amazing things in his classroom this month that involve getting the students motivated. The Hall of Fame projects had his students talking outside of class about their projects, and the enthusiasm was amazing to see. Even the other students in my classes who don't have Mr. Whitlock this year were excited to go see these student's projects. It is important as a teacher to create lessons that our students can relate with, and he always does a very good job with this. I love listening to Mr. Whitlock talk about what he is planning for his class, because he is always excited and I love to see his dedication to each of our students. I would also like to applaud him for helping one of our students get a short story published this month. You can tell that he has made a major impact on this student's life.
Congratulations to all honorees and their families. Thank you Home National Bank for your continued support!
